Books for Reading Redhawks

My students need a larger selection of independent readers, including nonfiction titles, to push their accuracy and comprehension in preparation for first grade.

My Students

Each day my students spend 20 minutes reading independently to practice specific reading strategies and skills. During this time my students spread themselves throughout our room and eagerly read to their teachers and have conversations about what they are learning and the sight words they read.

My students come to us from throughout DC, and many take public transportation to get to school because of our focus on rigorous content and instruction.

My students are joyful and love celebrating each others success. Each week they are tested on their sight words and love watching their pictures move up a visual tracker in our room.

My Project

The books requested in this order will be used in our classroom library. Individual students check out books for a week or two at a time and keep a collection of 8-10 books at their seats. This bag of books is then their 'go to' books during independent reading.

The more rigorous leveled books (C, D, E, F) will help students who learn new skills such as decoding and self-reliance as the begin to read more challenging texts.

Additionally, adding new titles to our classroom collection will renew the excitement of book shopping and book selecting in our classroom.
