Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Located downtown, our middle school hosts students from fifth to eighth grade with the majority of our students taking the bus from Barrio Logan and Southeast San Diego. We are a free, public, college preparatory academy with open enrollment. We believe that a quality education should be available for all students, regardless of their background.
Our school will be a proof-point that schools with high concentrations of students that live in low-income communities are actually buildings filled with innovative, creative, engaged, passionate and valuable contributors to our community.
We are cultivating a professional community that prioritizes teacher collaboration and a developmentally-appropriate environment that is accessible and challenging to all learners. We are preparing our students to serve as leaders in the community once they graduate from college, by engaging them in authentic work that is rigorous and relevant to the 21st century.
The mission of our school is to ensure that our students develop the academic skills, intellectual habits, and character traits needed to succeed in top-quality high schools, colleges, and the competitive world.
My Project
Do you remember the first time you fell in love with a series of books? As young readers, many of our students have not yet had that experience. When looking at our original classroom library, few titles and genres speak to them because they are outdated. When students enjoy reading, they do it more often and become better at it.
These books will have a direct impact on our classroom because they will instantly put text into students' hands.
A refreshed library can change reading time from a struggle to joy. My heart soars when students come to me and ask, "Do you have any more of ______ books?" and they mention a series that has caught their attention.
