This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are creative, inquisitive, and full of personality. A child's reading skills are essential for success throughout their academic career and beyond. I am the Early Intervention Program (EIP) teacher for kindergarten and first grade in my school. Many of the students I serve struggle with reading and require additional services through our EIP Program. My class is about filing in gaps and building vocabulary and background knowledge.
My students want to be independent readers and are enthusiastic learners!
They work hard to build phonics skills as they learn to read. We celebrate every gain no matter how small! Our belief is that their success is in the growth!
My Project
They need story books and nonfiction books to build their stamina for reading, their background knowledge and their vocabulary. The pictures and stories will spark conversation and expose them to text with unfamiliar words. I cannot wait for them to see the animals they love in such vivid print. I know they will begin to ask questions and we can find the answers as we read they text together.
If I know my students, they will want to read the books repeatedly which will enhance their reading skills.
We will use the classroom library to increase their engagement and build their box of strategies to help them read. A classroom library is essential to increasing their literacy skills!
