My Students

Do you remember learning to read? You would read anything you could get your hands on. Please help to put these books into the hands of my students!

My school is located in a suburb.

The children of our school speak many languages and come from many different backgrounds. Our school is in a high needs, low income area where children do not have access to books at home. This year my first grade class consists of 17 boys and 9 girls. They are a high energy bunch that works hard at school every day. When they go home at night many do not have books to read to complete their homework. They see other names on the school wide reading wall go higher and higher while theirs stay the same. The few low level books that we have in our classroom library are checked out every night, read, and returned, but there are never enough.

My Project

Currently students are allowed to take two books from the classroom library home to read each night. Unfortunately there are never enough low level books for everyone to take books home. By helping to purchase these sight word reading book sets there should be enough books that all my low level readers will be able to get the practice they need to improve their reading skills. The more they read the better reader they will become. We had just begun a new writing project and one of my students wrote two lines of writing and a drew a beautiful picture. I asked him to read his story to me and he looked at me with a very serious face and said "you know I can't read". It almost broke my heart. I don't want any of my students to feel this way again. My students need the right tools to practice at home the skills that they are learning at school. Please help open this door for my students.

This year 47% of my first grade students are reading less than 6 words per minute and do not have the fundamental skills needed to begin reading.

They will need so much extra support to catch up. Thank you for considering providing some of the extra support my student need. The more text students are exposed to the more they will want to interact with. Being able to take home books to read to their families might be the extra step my students need to become strong readers.
