My students need more books for the Spanish classroom library! In this project, we have 3 scaffolded readers in Spanish that native and non-native students can easily read for direct or indirect instruction!
I have an amazing group of students from many different walks of life. My 265 students range from 6th grade to 8th grade, with various linguistical abilities and some of them are from bilingual families.
Most of my students are non-native Spanish speakers, who are just starting to learn Spanish and 60 of my students are native speakers from various Latin American countries.
My non-native speakers are enthusiastic, curious, and actively problem-solving when they are faced with comprehension questions of a story that is completely in the target language. My native Spanish speakers are enthusiastic, fun, curious, and hungry for authentic resources that showcase their Latin American culture, traditions, and values.
My students are ecstatic that we've had donors help us create our classroom library. In this project, we are looking for 3 readers that are scaffolded for native and non-native Spanish speakers alike.
"El escape Cubano" shows how your life can change in a matter of minutes, "La vampirita" will take us through the dense jungle of Colombia, and "Rival" will take us back to the Spanish Reconquista in 1212.
All of these readers are easily attainable to both native and non-native Spanish speakers. The novels are written mostly in the present tense and navigate, just slightly, the past tense. These novels will push our inquisitive students to make connections with the past, their life experiences, but most importantly compare their experiences to the experiences of people outside of the United States.
