My Students

I teach reading to third graders in a Title 1 school in upstate NY. The students I teach are a diverse group of learners with two things in common, they struggle with reading but still get excited when they get to choose books for independent reading time. During this time they eagerly "shop my library" for that "just right" book. They look so excited when they return to their seats, book in hand. Unfortunately the books they tend to chose are not "just right" for them. They want to read the chapter books most of their peers do, but they just can't navigate them yet. As a result they often feel unsuccessful during reading time.

My students need "just right" books that are on their reading level so that they can become more independent readers and feel more successful as readers.

Right now my classroom library is lacking the books my students need to find this success. I know the books I've chosen will really help my students become more independent and help them find success as readers.

My Project

My students look forward to independent reading time and really want to read. They get so excited when they can choose their own book. They love looking through the class library using the strategies I've taught to find the perfect book. Right now, my library is lacking the perfect books for my struggling readers. This makes it difficult for my students to choose books.

These books would not only make it easier for my students to choose books for independent reading, but also give them the confidence they need to grow as readers.

They will be so excited to get these books.
