Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from all different types of homes: dual parent homes, single parent homes, multi-generational homes, foster homes, broken homes, homes with a parent deployed, or even some who are homeless. My students attend a Title I school in inner city San Diego and they go to school for a better life and future. Despite their differences and challenges, they come to school ready to learn. Our school provides an opportunity and the skills necessary for students to become more prepared for college and/or a career that they are passionate about. These students seek out opportunities to achieve higher than anyone in their family has before. Often my students are not native English speakers, which inhibits their confidence, especially in an English/history classroom with the rigor implemented.

My Project

These materials will make a difference in my students learning by allowing them to have novels in my classroom to read. We read daily in my class in order to promote a reading culture at school. I want to continue this reading culture through this in our class library, where students can read books that they are interested in and at their reading level.

A lot of my current books in my classroom library are dated and I want to help make books available to students that they will not only challenge them, but also something that they will enjoy.

If I want students to read I need to give them books that are exciting, which can only help spark their imagination and interest in reading. The more books that I can provide them with that they enjoy, the more my students will WANT to read, rather that it just being a requirement. These books will impact my students in so many different ways and I can't wait to see enjoyment these books will provide for my students.
