Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are special because they have the strength to persevere through challenges many adults have not been through, in order to achieve the best education they can. This past school year my school explored how trauma affects the brain. I reflected on how the students in my class have been resilient through poverty, domestic abuse, relocation as refugees, and a variety of other experiences.

And yet, these experiences never define my students.

This past year my students read in class for at least 30 minutes, EVERY SINGLE DAY! All students in my classroom are expected and required to do their best, no excuses. The plan for this coming school year is to do the same thing with even more exciting and relevant books.

I do not yet know the names and stories of the students coming into my classroom this coming school year. I can guarantee they will each have a story, personality, and goals uniquely their own. My job is to support them on their journey to being well, rounded members of society.

My Project

Imagine looking at a library, full of excitement, to find that no books relate to your family or your personal experiences. My students represent the best of the United States, with their multiple experiences and cultural backgrounds. However, my classroom library does little to spawn excitement through rich texts that the characters look like my students.

By donating to this project, you will be giving my students the opportunity to have characters that reflect the diversity of my classroom which will motivate students to, not only read, but understand each other better.

These stories will be read in small groups and encourage understanding each other better. The books will spawn intense conversations and analytical thinking that will help my students challenge the ideals pushed upon them by society.
