Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

MOOOOOOOOVE over Oprah's Book Club! The second graders in Los Angeles are having titillating conversations about serious literature. You've got to fund Literature Circles to believe it. Literature Circles encourage English Language Learners to read, listen, speak, and write while thinking critically about quality children's literature. They encourage children to become life long readers and critical thinkers. After implementing Literature Circles for one year in my second grade classroom and writing a thesis on this practice, I know that Literature Circles provide a student-centered forum for learning. Literature Circles are heterogeneous, student-led book clubs which provide learners with opportunities to discuss books in small groups. Each Literature Circle member performs a discrete role to accommodate different learning styles. Children's discussions in Literature Circles honor prior knowledge allowing for all students of different reading levels to feel successful. I work at a relatively new, inner-city school that lacks funds to buy sets of books for Literature Circles. Our library does not have multiple copies of books nor does it have a wide selection of quality literature. Young readers must be exposed to as many books as possible and should be given choice when selecting reading materials. Unfortunately, our school follows a reading program, which does little to entice English Language Learners to read. The district-provided basal reader that teachers must use is not always culturally relevant nor does it provide students with choice when reading, both of which are necessary to motivate young children and inspire a love of literature. If my proposal is funded, my students will have the opportunity to read widely and use their higher-level thinking skills in authentic discussions about literature. I have seen my own students grow tremendously as readers and thinkers after implementing Literature Circles over the course of one year. They became self-regulated learners and monitored each other's learning with a sense of purpose, excitement, and empowerment. With your help, I will no longer need to make multiple trips to various local libraries and the librarians will no longer curse me as they see me approach in search of literary ammunition. Thank you for considering my project and supporting young learners.
