My kindergarten students are energetic, enthusiastic, and excited about experiencing new things.
They love to learn and just can’t wait to become independent readers. Our school is a community that values a safe and healthy environment where all individuals are respected. In our promotion of healthy bodies and minds, my students are learning to collaborate inside and outside the classroom. In order to be developmentally appropriate, my students rotate through hands-on stations practicing literacy learning. As their first educational experience, it is vital for students to love being at school and collaborating with peers.
My Project
To be a successful reader, phonics and phonemic awareness skills are necessary to decode text. Emergent Readers are designed to systematically introduce foundational phonics skills teaching students the relationship between letters and sounds. The Emergent Readers in my project are carefully designed to offer beginning readers extensive opportunities to apply and internalize what they have learned about letters, speech sounds, letter-sound correspondences, meaningful word parts, and high-frequency words as they practice reading connected, complex, authentic text. The decodable books in my project will help provide my beginner readers the reading practice that is necessary with books they can actually read. Reading can and should be fun, not frustrating. With the right tools and books in hand, emergent readers will build their skills and feel proud of themselves while also developing a love of reading.
