Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from low socio-economic backgrounds and attend a Title 1 school with one hundred percent free and reduced lunch. Approximately thirty-two percent of the school is on or above grade level. They struggle each and every day to retain the necessary on-grade level information and standards to close the learning gap. Since my students are still young, my hope is to get all of them to love learning and be on or above grade level by the end of the school year.
They deserve the same opportunities to learn as other children with no disadvantages.
My Project
Some of the students that were displaced by the powerful, devastating storm, Hurricane Irma, ended up here in beautiful Central Florida and were enrolled in my class. Most of the students are high achieving and come here with limited English. They are extremely smart in their native language and desire to read books that are challenging, not ones that remind them of being in kindergarten. I believe that if I put more interesting books on the shelves, this will help them adjust better and feel more comfortable here at school. They deserve to continue to read books in their native language while working on their English skills.
