Celebrate Black Teachers and Students
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are an inner-city magnet school in our district with a medical theme. My students come from all over the city, from all different schools, cultures, and backgrounds. In spite of the many obstacles, such as being homeless, my students achieve higher than all the neighboring high schools and have a 100% graduation rate and college acceptance rate.
Unfortunately, many of our students struggle with homelessness.
Our school is located in a low-income area with 100% of the students receiving free lunch. More than three-quarters of our students are from low-income households.
Most of our students select careers in the medical field. Their access to resources needed to prepare them for this path is very limited. DonorsChoose.org makes it possible for our children to have the necessary tools to succeed.
My Project
Our students attend our school to prepare for a career in medicine. Many want a career path within the animal science realm. We have a Humane Education course and a Veterinarian in Training program. Because this is a new field of study within education, it is very difficult to order books associated with this topic through the district suppliers. This project allows us to order specific books that will educate the students in animal sciences/behaviors and novel readers about dogs and their behaviors as well. The students selected all the books in this project and are very excited about receiving these books.
