My Students

I have a very diverse classroom. My students come from a variety of social and economic backgrounds. I also have a wide range of ability levels. But, the one thing they have in common is they all love science. Most of them will tell you it's their favorite subject, and they love reading about science.

I teach 5th grade in a title one public school, which means the majority of my students are living at or below the poverty level.

Half of my students receive services from special education. At the same time, many of my students are working well above grade level and need to be challenged. Due to learning disabilities and poverty my students face many challenges, but they are still curious and eager learners. They have a variety of learning styles, but most of my students learn by doing. They love doing science experiments and any type of hands-on activity. Though many come from homes with few books, they love reading any books related to science. My students are wonderful at cooperative learning. They love to read with a fellow classmate, and then discuss what they've just read. When we do an experiment they are always coming up with ways to expand the experiment and take it a step further. Despite obstacles they may now face, I know they can and will succeed.

My Project

My students love science. They love reading about different scientific topics and doing experiments. The books I'm requesting will help my students expand their knowledge, and also help them when conducting experiments. The multiple copies of the same title will allow my students to work in cooperative groups. Learning to work with others is a skill they will use now and in the future. The books contain a lot of different activities and experiments they can do individually or in a group. These books will help my students work on research skills as they do research for a project. Most of my students come from homes with few books or computers, so they lack the resources at home to work on projects. These materials will also help my students complete projects to enter into the Science Fair, and be able to compete with other students in our school district. In addition to science these books will also be used to improve their reading comprehension skills and vocabulary.

These books will help my students to reach their full potential.

I really do believe I have a room full of future scientists. All they need is the right encouragement and resources. We can provide the encouragement, but these books will help them expand their knowledge. These resources will help keep my students excited about learning and science. The skills and knowledge they learn will carry over into other areas of study. Please help mold and create future scientists.
