Our school is part of a small, family-like community. Our students are amazing kids - they are creative, curious, and compassionate. They work hard and they take care of each other. They have a wide variety of strengths and talents, and all together they make our school a beautiful place.
Books are a part of almost everything we do, and it's amazing to see the discovery, wonder, or laughter play across the students' faces as we explore different texts, or to see them get lost in a favorite book.
My Project
We want to start a middle school free book fair. In the past we have had great success with providing elementary students with a wide selection of books to choose from, which they get to take home and read over the summer. We would love to expand this opportunity to our middle school, and provide our older readers with books of their very own!
Access to books interesting to each reader is proven to help instill a love of reading in students.
This program will help ensure that every student, regardless of proximity to the library or money for the bookstore, has a stack of books that they can't wait to dive into. Research has shown that reading just 5 chapter books over the summer is enough to prevent "the summer slide". In addition to keeping their minds sharp, we want to keep our students' imaginations and creativity going strong.
