Books For Every Mind: Special Ed Reads for Rural Teens

My Project

I work with high school special education students in a small, rural Maine community. These teens are bright, curious, and full of potential, but they don’t always have access to the kinds of books that reflect their experiences, expand their horizons, or meet them where they are as readers.

In rural areas, publicly available resources are limited, and for students with diverse learning needs, the options can feel even narrower.

My goal is to create a classroom library filled with books at a variety of reading levels—stories that are contemporary, engaging, and relevant to their lives right now. These books will help spark curiosity, build confidence, and open doors to new ideas, places, and possibilities.

When students see themselves in a story—or discover something they never imagined—they start to see the world differently. They start to see themselves differently, too. That’s the kind of reading experience I want to offer: one that excites them, challenges them, and shows them just how far their minds can go.
