My Project
Children with disabilities and communication challenges often face unique barriers to learning and social connection. Access to engaging and developmentally appropriate books can make a significant difference in their educational journey. Books help build vocabulary, improve listening skills, and support comprehension—all of which are essential for children who may struggle to express themselves verbally.
For non-verbal or minimally verbal students, picture books and interactive stories provide an accessible way to explore language and ideas.
They can also serve as tools for modeling communication, whether through speech or augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices.
Additionally, stories that feature diverse characters and inclusive themes can help these students feel seen, understood, and empowered. When students can connect with a story, they are more likely to engage, participate, and grow both academically and emotionally.
By providing a rich selection of books tailored to their needs and interests, we can foster a love of reading, enhance language development, and open the door to meaningful communication for every child—regardless of their ability level.
