My Students

I am a teacher at a Title I school where 90% of my students live in low-income households. Our school was shut down in March of 2020, and since then, the community has worked tirelessly to provide adequate virtual education for all learners. We are finally gearing up as a district to return in-person next month, September 2021! Although students will still be able to receive the free daily meals that they are used to receiving in school, there is still a need for basic supplies this school year due to the unforeseen challenges this year has brought for students and families.

I am so excited to welcome my third graders back to school in person; they deserve nothing less than the best experiences and materials!

Third grade is a year of rigorous yet rewarding work and my students always rise to the challenge! The encouragement, positivity, and collaboration of my students continues to amaze me every day. Despite all the uncertainty of this year and the amount of learning they have missed out on due to the pandemic, they continue to persevere and make learning so meaningful! They deserve to be afforded all of the opportunities in the world.

My Project

Picture books provide optimal opportunities for students to get a glimpse of the lives of others and connect to emotions of characters. Great books can teach character lessons that open up dialogue about what students would do in the characters’ shoes - exactly what we want young students building empathy to experience.

With these character-building picture books, students can find engaging books with characters going through similar life experiences - they can see themselves.

Are students nervous about being back at school in person for the first time since they were in first grade? We'll have a book for that. Is a student having a hard time relating to other kids in our school? There's a book for that! Are kids finding it really, really hard to be kind? There will be a book for that! This literature will not only help students connect to their current situation (through diverse characters and topics), but will also open the door for powerful, important conversations about tolerance, friendship, and kindness. We will use the animal pencil erasers and squishy mini toys as encouragement and self-regulation tools. The thank-you and blank animal greeting cards will provide students with the perfect materials to practice writing thank you letters and check-in cards for their friends after reading these stories. These materials will be so helpful in creating a classroom community and building empathy in students! Thank you in advance for supporting our classroom.
