My students need a bigger selection of books to add to the classroom library.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students face many challenges every day in school and out. Most are new to this country and don't understand the English language. Other students struggle with a range of disabilities.
I teach second grade at a multicultural school in the Bronx, New York.
Students here are not only diverse culturally, but economically and academically as well. The typical student in my class reads at a kindergarten level and many struggle with basic phonics and number sense. My students, however, are eager to learn.
My Project
Reading is so important! Students are required to carry a book baggie with a selection of books on their reading level, back and forth from home to school every night. They are reading in school and fill out a reading log at home. This project is so important because we need the books to build our classroom library!
My students get just as excited as I do when we get new books!
It excites them because the books are full of new stories, or new topics to learn about.
Students get tired of seeing the same books again and again in the library. New books will excite them and they will be eager to read them! When students are excited to read, they become excited about learning!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
