Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a Title I school in Reno, Nevada, teaching some of the most in need students in the area. Many of the students that attend school here live in apartments with other families because they can't afford housing on their own. Students at my school get free breakfast and lunch each day to ensure they are getting the food they may not be getting at home. Many families are learning English as a second language and many parents work multiple jobs to support their families.

Students are hardworking and know how important their education is to their success later in life.

Students work hard each day and are thankful that they have a safe place to come and learn as much as they can each day. Many students participate in the after school program that runs until 6pm each night. This program includes an extra hour of tutoring for students to ensure all students are meeting state educational standards. Also, included in this program are hands-on science activities that allow students to research and explore!

My Project

If my project is funded, students will be granted greater access to more up-to-date articles. Students will also learn more about text features while reading informational text.

Using Storyworks Jr.

will help me customize instruction for every student, regardless of their reading level. I will have a range of engaging texts in a variety of genres that I need to teach. Storyworks Jr. will give me a wider range of activities and formative assessments that will boost skills and comprehension. This project will allow students to have access to educational online resources, including video and audio of each version's main stories. Students will also be able to learn about and read more up-to-date informational text, which they don't have access to when using the state's adopted curriculum. If this project is fully funded, students will have stories at different levels, access to video read-alouds, audio versions of the articles, and scaffolded activities to go along with the readings.
