Books for Building Bolder Readers

My students need books that encourage them to become life-long readers such as current popular books, as well as books that appeal to deaf adolescents.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Copeland-Samaripa's classroom raised $816

My Students

An important part of reading is making personal connections with a text. Many of my students are exposed to stories that have little interest to them, or include characters that do not share the deaf world my students inhabit.

We are a school for the deaf where students come from a wide variety of backgrounds.

Our student body is much like any other high school (racially, economically, academically, etc.). The only difference is, my students all have some degree of hearing loss. Many of our students are struggling readers. Based on a recent survey in which 65% of our students responded, nearly 70% of respondents admitted they spend less than an hour a week reading for enjoyment. 40% stated that if they were given more book options that appealed to them, they would read more often. We have begun establishing a sustained silent reading program and building a library specifically geared toward providing students with books that appeal to them. We received many donations of books (a majority of which have been published in the 90s or earlier). Now we want to expand our library to include more current books.

My Project

The books we are requesting will just scratch the surface of what our SSR library needs, but it contains a list of many books with deaf characters or themes that would be familiar to our students. It also contains some of the latest popular books that our students have been begging to get their hands on. We also selected books that would appeal to our most resistant struggling readers. These books also give teachers access to books that could tie in to current instructional themes.

Our students deserve a chance to fall in love with a good book.

They deserve to have access to books that include characters they can relate to. I want to walk down the halls seeing students recommending books to each other and sharing a passion for reading. One of the best educational tools you can provide for a child is the establishment of life-long reading habits.
