My students are deaf high school students in grades 9-12th. Some of my classes contain students who are reading at a 3/4th grade level while some are Pre-AP and honors students. Their primary language is ASL. Many of them have hearing families that do not sign, or families that speak Spanish only. Their exposure to current events is often limited to what they can get off of Facebook (TV closed captions are not always easy for struggling readers to comprehend and a lot of content online is difficult to read or inaccessible if you can't hear). These are student who are a few years (if not months) away from graduating and becoming autonomous adults who will be expected to make informed decisions.
