My Students

Our school is located in a very diverse neighborhood in Brooklyn. My students are 5 years old. They are an enthusiastic and hard-working bunch. Many of my kindergarteners are growing up in low-income homes and do not have access to the learning materials at home needed to promote their academic growth. Regardless of the challenges they face, my students are highly motivated and love coming to school.

The spectrum of developmental levels in kindergarten is vast, and I am working hard to meet the needs of all my students.

My Project

Learning to read opens up a world of opportunities. My students are eager to learn to read on their own. I feel lucky and privileged to guide them through the magical world of books.

I am asking for a variety of books for my growing readers.

My students need multiple copies of emergent story books such as The Snowy Day and Leo the Late Bloomer. I read the same book to my students for several days. This helps them build story language and understand the story structure. Then I give my students the copies of the book so they can practice "reading" on their own. First they look at the pictures and tell the story from memory, then they learn to find familiar words. This kind of reading develops oral language and provides solid foundation for conventional reading. I am also asking for early chapter books for my advanced readers. While most of my students are just learning to read, there are a few who are already reading, and I am considering their needs as well.
