My Students

If a book is well written, I always find it too short." This quote by Jane Austen is the inspiration behind the selection of the books in this Books for Boys grant. We seek to add books to our collection that will leave readers, especially our boys, wanting more!

Students at our 100 percent poverty inner-city school have tremendous potential.

However, due to circumstances beyond their control, our students often begin school in a deficit. Many have the barrier of a new language to learn with family members often unable to assist them. Even if English is a student's primary language, many lack a solid early childhood learning foundation. Needless to say, our students and teachers have a lot of ground to cover particularly in the area of reading. Since literacy is critical to all other learning, we must foster in our students a desire to read. With that in mind, the addition of books that are eye-catching, scary, and even gross are ones we seek to add to our collection. Why? These are ones our students, especially boys, want to read!

My Project

"Finally, a library that understands me!" This was the happy comment a student made recently as he checked out books from our library. As the school librarian, it was thrilling that this young man found some books on our shelves that piqued his interest. It also fans the desire to have more of these high-interest books available. Too often, I have to tell students that books they want have already been checked out. This is partly due to the popularity of these titles but also because of our limited collection of these favorites. For our boys, frequently requested books range from ones on superheroes like Batman to scary stories to nonfictional topics like animals.

The donation of these books benefits our entire school.

This collection is for our library and while specifically geared to our guys will be available for all students to check out. Along with a variety of topics, these books have been selected to benefit students on all reading levels. In the long run, our students' increased interest in reading will have rippling effects as their improvements in literacy translate into gains in all academic areas.
