Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Teenage boys don't like to read. However, if you give a teenage boy a book at his level about a topic he likes, he won't put it down.

My students are 10th grade high school students who live and attend school in an urban city in California.

Over 60% of my classes are composed of teenage boys. These boys love playing video games, riding bikes, and playing sports. But, they hate to read. For many, reading is not something they are very good at. In fact, over half read far below grade level. Also, most of my teenage boys come from immigrant families that do not have the resources to help them improve their reading skills. In order for these boys to improve their literacy skills, they have to practice reading and I, as their teacher, have to provide them with a variety of books at their levels that they will enjoy reading.

My Project

To achieve this goal, I have selected a series of low-level books that feature topics teenage boys will love to learn about. These books target all the things they love - video games, riding bikes, and sports. They also are written at levels that they will be able to read. Once these books make their way into my classroom, I will be able to match each of my teenage boy reluctant readers with a book that they can read at their level. By reading their "personal" book, these students will gain confidence, develop reading skills, and have fun.

By contributing to this project, you will help a reluctant teenage boy to improve his reading skills.

My teenage boys will even finish reading books! This will build their confidence and have a deep, lasting impact on their educational career. Literacy is a gateway to high school graduation. By providing my students with these books, you will help a student take steps toward graduating and becoming a lifelong reader.
