Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Each December, I share a Christmas-themed book with my 3rd–5th grade students as a special way to foster a love of reading during the holiday season. One particular favorite among my 5th graders is *The True Gift*—a sweet and touching story about a brother and sister who give of themselves to show kindness to someone they care about. The well-developed characters have inspired meaningful classroom discussions and character studies that help students connect emotionally with the story.

In the past, I’ve relied on borrowing copies from the public library, but they are often in high demand and difficult to obtain during the holiday season.

Last year, I introduced the *Heidi Heckelbeck* series to a group of reluctant 3rd grade readers and was thrilled to see it spark genuine excitement about reading. Many continued reading the series independently, which was a huge win.

This spring, I’m looking forward to sharing the graphic novel *When Stars Are Scattered* with my 5th graders. It tells a powerful, relatable story that opens the door to empathy and deep discussion. After reading, students will create their own graphic novels, giving them a chance to explore storytelling through both words and art.
