My Students

My students are 16- and 17-year-olds who live in Mesa, Arizona, a city of 1,000,000 people. They take my Junior English or AP English Language and Composition courses at MVHS.

Both classes are focused on choice reading, meaning that students pick the majority of texts they read and decide how to demonstrate their understanding of those texts.

Students also engage in Book Clubs of their peers, which involves selecting books to read and discuss together.

While we have a school library, it does not have multiple copies of the same books, so students are limited in what they are able to read in Book Clubs. I would love for my students to have access to multiples copies of the same books so that they can continue reading together!

My Project

Providing students with access to multiple copies of the same books will enable them to engage in Book Clubs with their peers. These Book Clubs are essential in increasing student agency, engagement, and achievement. Students love getting to pick their own books and discussing them in groups because they get to be in charge of their learning, they get to read something they enjoy, and they are more likely to produce creative and detailed projects that synthesize their understanding of the texts. Students truly become the drivers of their own education.
