As the part time counselor at Supply Elementary School in Supply, NC, one of my duties has been to provide guidance to the three preschool classes. Each of the classes is set up to help developmentally delayed children. Most fall into the economically disadvantaged category. In spite of their disadvantages, these children love to listen to me and others read books to them. In our small rural area, it is difficult for parents to take their children to the public library. The parents have little or no reliable transportation, do not read or have little interest in reading, or are working during the times the libraries are open. Often, these children have little or no reading material in their homes. To start the children off on the right track, I propose to purchase inexpensive books to give away to each preschool child on his/her birthday during the school year. Those whose birthdays fall during the vacation times will be given a book at the end of the school year. Each child will select one book from a larger set of easy reader picture-type books. This will increase their interest in reading, and they will be on their way to a lifelong love of reading.
