Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are all bilingual and bicultural and are very hopeful for their future.
"Bilingualism opens doors and provides opportunity to our children so they can shine and become successful in a labor market that is increasingly competitive and globalized." -Franc Fortuno.
I will be welcoming a new group of first grade students into my classroom and I am excited to get to know all of them. My students are 95% Latino and majority of them are receiving free or reduced lunch. They come from distinct households where they might be living with both of their parents, maybe one or with a close family member, like a grandparent. About 90% of my students will be coming in to first grade, reading at "below grade level". My students are coming from households in which they know Spanish and can understand it but many of them will also be coming from English Only households, where the only Spanish they are exposed to, is at school. Their kindergarten teachers have exposed them to both English and Spanish (reading/speaking). When they begin first grade and throughout, I hope to continue their love and engagement with both languages through speaking, writing and reading.
My Project
The books that I will be ordering for my students are all in Spanish and are at "grade level". The book sets I am including in my order are for different ranges in reading level, starting from level A, all the way to level E. These guided reading book sets and single books will allow my students use these books during personal time, once they are done with work, reading time, and also during our guided reading groups. Students are also allowed to take books home, meaning they will continue to enjoy these books in their homes. This will be extra helpful to me in the classroom, because our resources are limited. It will also be helpful to parents and guardians, because Spanish books are limited in public libraries. By having all of these resources available to students and families, it will become easier for them to have easy access to bilingual grade level books.
