Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 5th-grade special education students from diverse and low economic backgrounds. It is both a behavior and academic support classroom which means each student comes with unique and special academic needs. In our classroom, we work on building a community around what we have in common in addition to our shared learning experiences. My students are performing on academic levels from kindergarten to 5th grade. This is typically 3-grade levels far below expectation.

In the past couple of years, the various academic needs of students in our current world have significantly increased, so educators and all stakeholders need to put more energy and effort into providing the best support and opportunity, not only for their academic needs but also for their social-emotional well-being.

Our classroom is part of a larger school that celebrates inclusion, so we work daily on building skills and relationships, following directions, and accessing general education content in multiple ways. We continue to celebrate every little win together each day.

My Project

My students are more than three grade levels behind expectation in reading and math due to the disruption in learning as a result of the pandemic impact these past couple of years. They are not performing on grade level at this point and this does impact their academic progress.

The reading intervention set and decodable texts will help my struggling learners become confident readers, and the funding from this project will be very helpful to make this happen.

I would appreciate having classroom decodable texts so I can help my students close the reading gap and help meet each of their academic needs. I would use these text materials to help them stay engaged and enjoy reading and learning for their academic growth.
