I work with students K-5 at a Title I school. We are a school that has been through several changes this year. The biggest being construction to add on to our school. We serve around 760 students. My focus as a reading specialist is all things literacy especially guided reading/writing. They are excited about learning and thrive with engaging lessons and excel with unique learning environments. Engagement is very important to us!
Our students are the heart of our school.
We have implemented a house system over the past 4 years similar to that of the Ron Clark Academy. The house system has cultivated a sense of pride and honor amongst faculty, staff, and students. We show up everyday to make our students' lives better and to prepare them for the future. We have a house council made up of 25-5th grade students. These students work to serve our house system and school through various activities.
My Project
The goal for my students is to choose from a variety of diverse books and practice reading them. Once they are fluent and confident, they will read these books while being recorded. The recording will go on our school's Facebook page at least once a week as a bedtime treat for families to listen to these wonderful stories. Teachers in other classrooms will have access to these recordings so that students can listen to these books again in the classroom. The books we have chosen are representative of children from different backgrounds and abilities just like the students at our school. We have also chosen books that will help build character and community within our school building.
