My Students

Our classroom is home to 43 energetic, inquisitive and curious children and one inspired teacher! They love to experience new things. They love to escape into a good book. They love to research about things they don't know about. Me? I love fostering this learning!

Although they are naturally inquisitive, many of my students step into our classroom with stressors outside of school.

Over 90% of students in our building qualify for free or reduced rate lunch based on their socioeconomic status. Every student carries with them their own story, from single-parent upbringings and foster homes to homelessness and poverty.

School is a safe place for them to be and, in some cases, an escape. School is where they find solace among their friends, learn new things and find a sense of belonging. And, I get to witness this and support them each day as they find their way!

My Project

This project is designed to get copies of the 2018-19 Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) titles in the hands of 4th and 5th grade students. Oregon Battle of the Books helps to foster a love of reading through friendly competition. This program, which I volunteer with and encourage my students to participate in each year, is a statewide reading program sponsored by the Oregon Association of School Libraries.

The goal of OBOB is to encourage students to enjoy reading, broaden reading interests, increase comprehension skills, promote academic excellence and promote cooperative learning and teamwork among students.

Since multiple teams of students are reading the same titles, we are in need of several copies of each book so that all interested students can participate. Further, these titles are added to our classroom library after the annual OBOB battle events for children to enjoy for years to come. Past years’ titles are treasured finds in our classroom library and are go-to titles for reluctant readers who haven’t yet found their reading niche.

Your support of this project will help reach students who aren't normally motivated to read for fun due to the friendly competition OBOB offers. Some of my most struggling readers have demonstrated huge gains in their skills due to the additional reading opportunities. And, the best part? The kids have FUN!
