My Students

First grade is such a huge year for learning how to read. Most students come in barely reading and they leave being strong, confident readers. My students are eager to get books into their hands and love taking books home with them.

I teach in a low-income public school and have a high population of English Language Learners in my classroom.

This means that many of my students come to school without the adequate reading knowledge and experiences. They have a lot of catching up to do compared to a typical student who was read to since birth. As often as I read aloud to my students, usually 2-3 books a day, they enjoy having their own books to read, especially at home. I want to provide all of my students with meaningful reading experiences throughout their year with me.

My Project

To become confident readers, students need to be able to continue practicing their reading at home. I would like to provide my students with opportunities to earn books that they can keep at home and start their own personal libraries.

This project will assist my students in their journey of learning to read.

During our time together, students are provided with books that they read at school and then are allowed to bring them home to practice. But they must return them to school so others can read them. I want them to have great, high-interest books that they know and love that they can keep at home and call their own.

This project will provide them with familiar and loved books like Elephant and Piggie, Pete the Cat, Biscuit and engaging nonfiction. It will allow my students to have books of their own at home that they can read and share with their families.
