This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day in my classroom centers around reading, discussing, and interpreting works of literature from William Shakespeare to Toni Morrison. Students engage in close readings of complex text and talk with each other about their insights and reactions before writing about their interpretations, all in preparation for the AP Literature and Composition test and for the work they will face in a college classroom.

My students are 12th graders who come from all over the city to our global studies magnet program.

They are ambitious and goal-oriented in their academics. The elementary and middle school education of my students varies widely; some come prepared for high school work, but many have experienced gaps in their learning that affects their success at the high school level.

My Project

Both "Mythology" and "How to Read Literature Like a Professor" are books that will help my seniors get ready for college classes where professors will expect them to understand how to interpret allusions, symbols, and themes in works of literature. Because many of my students are English Learners, they will greatly benefit from these supports that will make my course materials more accessible.

These books will support my students' understanding of the complex and sometimes archaic texts that we read in AP Literature and Composition.

They will be key resources in preparing my students for the high rigor of the AP Literature and Composition test in May.
