My Students
Do you often hear how kids nowadays aren't reading enough? They spend too much time in front of their devices and load up on screen time? You hear it all the time, right? Well my school might be the ONE place where the majority of kids would choose to read. Really!
My students have developed rich reading lives.
They read every night at home for 20 minutes and another 30 minutes at school. That's about an hour a day of INDEPENDENT reading.
They get to choose their own books and we conference over them once they finished. They recommend books to one another. They have favorite authors and genres. I'm telling you these kids LOVE to read. And yes, there are a few who haven't found their way, but I am working on them.
My Project
Sounds pretty great, right? It is. I am one lucky teacher. But I need more books to keep up with them. They read about 40 books a year! That's a lot of books! I need fresh titles to add to my collection. I want the best for these kids. Everyday I do a "book talk" to chat up a new book. I am always looking to match great books to my readers. We need a wide selection of new books to keep them reading. They are eager readers. We need single titles of great books for 9 and 10 year olds so I can keep them reading.
Kids keep track of the books they want to read and the books they have finished. They have time to talk to one another about their books and they meet with me as well. We write reviews of our favorites and keep reading blogs to share recommendations. They learn the joy of being an engaged reader. They meet characters they will never forget. They learn lessons that extend far beyond our classroom walls.
