My Students

Imagine not being able to do the following: say what you want to eat, tell someone you love them, or describe your pain when you are sick. I spend the majority of my day in three self-contained classes with many students that can not do these things. My kiddos in these classes have varying degrees of exceptionalities and learning capabilities. Most of my students have difficulty with communication, several are non-verbal, many have high medical needs, and ALL of them require different modes of learning/adaptions for learning.

Standard middle school literacy activities do not meet my students needs.

In order to meet their language needs I use a lot of picture books!

Celebrating small successes are how we make it through the day!

My Project

Literacy is so important- You can take a new adventure each day with books. My students LOVE to read! Unfortunately, due to their disabilities, reading does not come easy. I spend a lot of time printing pictures, laminating them, and adding Velcro to the back so that I can adapt these books for them. Adapting books makes it so much easier for my students to participate... they can read (by looking at pictures), re-tell the story and answer comprehension questions. Books are the main focus in my therapy sessions and my students could never have too many! These books will be adapted and take us through each month and theme throughout the school year!
