Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love to read from sitting in the carpet, corner of the room, their desks and in our small groups. They realize the importance of learning more than one language and really appreciate both their Spanish and English learning.
Mis estudiantes aman la literatura y les gusta los libros que les enseña amistad, ser humildes, y respetar a los demás como el libro “Wonder” .
These kids are wonderfully learning to appreciate various cultural differences and respect each other’s language and learning. I want to continue sharing that knowledge that books can show and open doors in the world.
My Project
I work in a dual immersion elementary school with a magnet emphasis in environmental science. Currently, I only have a classroom library supported by English books. These books are great because my students can practice their reading comprehension skills in a English. However, my students’ Spanish language is suffering because they are not currently exposed to many Spanish books in their grade level.
My 4th grade students need more exposure to Spanish chapter books like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Esperanza Rising, Because of Winn-Dixie, and more.
These books will help my students continue their love of reading by enhancing their Spanish skills, which is the goal of our dual immersion school - exposure to reading books in more than one language. This will also help my Spanish Language Development group to grow and enhance their Spanish during our literature circles and novel studies. My students practice skills such as text evidence, asking and answering questions, summarizing, character analysis,
