I teach in a Title I school where over 85% of the students in my class will qualify for free and reduced-priced lunch because of their low economic status. Many of my students face challenges every day at school and at home. They have very limited choices in their lives, and it is my mission to provide them with the best learning environment possible.
These energetic sixth graders often have limited choices for what they do from day to day, but by having flexible seating options in my classroom, it will give them more opportunities to learn how they best work.
With a high poverty level, many of my students face multiple challenges both in and out of the classroom, but they are very brave. We learn so much from them! It is my goal every day to make our classroom welcoming, inviting and an active, dynamic place to learn.
My Project
In my cart, I have requested two different kinds of books: graphic novels and books with diverse characters. What I have learned is that some of my students are more engaged or interested in sitting down and reading a book if it is set up like a comic. Books like Dog-Man and more were such staples in my classroom that I have started searching for them at thrift stores and at yard sales. It would be excellent, however, to build up my graphic novel collection with books that have different content compared to Dav Pilkey's Dog-Man and Captain Underpants. Along with that, I am hoping to increase the amount of books in my classroom that will help my students see a different perspective than the ones they are used too.
Along with that, I hoping to increase my students choices in flexible learning by having a class set of clipboards that also serve as dry erase boards.
By allowing students to work around the room, it gives them the ability to move to where they will best work. Whether that be under a table, in a traditional chair, or sitting on one of flexible seating choices that is available in my room.
