Books: Can't Live Without Them! Books Make Magic Happen!
My students need a plethora of reading materials, 5 sets of both fiction and non-fiction books, in order to stimulate their thinking and broaden their reading experiences.
Background knowledge is critical for student learning. By providing books, both fiction and non-fiction at individualized reading levels, new knowledge will become their reading foundation.
Students will immerse themselves in the lives of a character, or learn about our solar system, etc.
My students are curious children who strive to make sense of the world they live in.
They are beginning to understand that they can learn about themselves through the eyes of a character, understand relationships, hardships, etc. In addition, my students need more background knowledge to bring to their reading experience. This broadens their perception of the world they live in and will allow them to appreciate the gifts around them.
My Project
It is imperative that my students feel empowered with the confidence they need to forge ahead. By immersing themselves in literature, not only will their vocabulary be enriched, but they will appreciate and better understand the world around them and their place in the world. Most importantly they will develop a love of reading, a gift that can never be taken away.
Many of my students write and talk about video games and seldom draw on reading experiences in their lives.
Their knowledge base is limited. By shifting their paradigm about reading both fiction and non-fiction, my students will look forward to reading and not think of it as something to get over with. They will become energized, excited and yearn for their next book, their next new learning and be filled with pride.
