My Students
What would it be like to move to a new country and learn a new language? We have a large population of ELL student and low income immigrant families. We want to expose our students to a local author Lynn Plourde who has a depth of books with themes about Maine.
Our school is the most diversified school in the state of Maine.
We have 46 countries and 28 languages represented by our student population. Most do not have any support at home with reading/writing since most parents do not speak English. Our students are eager to learn their new language and explore their new home. What a better way to do both by emerging the student body with books by a local author. Some of our students have never seen snow, mountains, oceans and are not familiar with our customs. Ms. Plourde's books not only promote literacy but explore Maine topics in a fun and child friendly way.
My Project
My students need 24 books by Lynn Plourde as we do a school wide study of this author.
The entire school would like to embark in a school wide literacy project. We have chosen Lynn Plourde since she is a local author and she has a depth of books that appeal to our elementary population. Each classroom would read all the books and then select one book which they will do a project on. The projects could include art, writing, drama, music, pod-casting, rapping, the possibilities are endless. For instance, if the classroom selected "A Mountain Of Mittens" all students might learn to knit mittens; or if they selected "Grandpappy Snippy Snappies, they might invite some grandparents to do a project. We will be video taping the students throughout the projects to create a finished video of their best performances that will be shared with the entire school and also at an evening for families. By having the entire school involved will create a synergy and awaken a love of reading for everyone.
We as teachers have spent a tremendous amount of time testing due to new state standards - it's time to get back to the fun of teaching!!!
This project will create an energy throughout the entire school and develop a strong sense of community. What a great way for our students to sharpen their reading skills and also learn more about where they live. Your support in the purchase of these books would help us tremendously - to have copies of all Ms. Plourde's books would be amazing!
