Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Both schools are strongly committed to interrupting patterns of injustice by providing students with a relevant, rigorous, and personalized educational experience.
LA is a 6-12 middle and high school in the Oakland Unified School District that serves 473 students. Ninety-four percent of students who attend receive free or reduced lunch. Twenty-three percent of students are classified as English Language Learners. The majority of the students are Hispanic/Latino students who live within the neighborhood the school serves. The high school, in particular, has a strong focus on health and bioscience, and students who attend participate in internships in that field.
USA is a 6-8 middle school in the Oakland Unified School District that serves 382 students. Eighty-eight point five percent of the students who attend our school receive free or reduced price lunch. Forty point six percent of students are classified as English Language Learners. Students at the school speak Spanish, Mam, Tongan, Arabic, Tagalog, Karen, Karenni, Nepali, and Chinese. USA has a Newcomer Program that serves up to 40 students who have moved to the United States in the last year and speak little English.
My Project
The books in this project are books requested by students, and some titles by favorite authors. Horror authors like Dan Poblocki are popular go-tos for many students who are reluctant readers.
Because students requested these books themselves, they are much more likely to check out and actually read these titles!!
Many of these books are also replacements for lost but super popular titles within series. When books are missing from popular series, it makes it harder for readers to build momentum and continue through the gaps, reluctant readers are especially likely to quit reading a series they otherwise love when a title is missing.
