One of my favorite units of the year with my juniors is the Native American literature unit in the spring. Students get the choice from among 4 novels written by 3 different Native American authors and they can read in small groups or alone. This gives students a different perspective than they are used to seeing in literature in school. It also allows us to evaluate setting, characterization, plot, and a variety of other literary analysis terms and tools. This non-dominant culture allows for a unique way to assess our core question of the year "What is the American Dream?"
