Books Build Bridges

My students need leveled non-fiction books and a bookshelf. The students love informational text and I know these books will help them be more successful learners.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine a home without books and magazines? Many of my students experience this and therefore they come to school very excited to explore the world of books in our classroom. I share many books every day and tell the students that books are the key to success. Books Build Bridges!

Our school is in the inner city in an area of poverty.

I have a delightful class of 27 kindergarten students for seven hours every day. With no assistant, I keep very busy but I love my kids because they are trying their best to get along and learn together. Most of my students are Hispanic and Spanish is spoken at home. I also have some Caucasian and some African Americans. We have truly formed a community this year. I am so proud that my students have learned so much, especially considering that many of them did not attend preschool. My students are very grateful for everything I do for them. They enjoy my treats, my dancing, my puppet shows, and through these activities, they've learned how to dance and tell a story with puppets. I have loved helping them to learn the letters and sounds and especially enjoy seeing them track the text in the books they are just now beginning to read on their own. They are enthusiastic about everything and I love them all dearly.

My Project

I am requesting sets of non-fiction books because these books serve a two-fold purpose: they are of high interest and provide a lot of information which will help build a foundation of knowledge for my students. This is the type of information that will later help them perform better on standardized tests. And, even more importantly, if they're reading something of interest perhaps they will learn to love reading as well. The informational books that I have selected cover a wide range of subjects in the areas of math, science and social studies. The books are simple yet informative and have great photographs. I know the students will love them and perhaps they will stumble upon something that piques their curiosity and encourage even more learning! I've also requested a bookcase to store the books. I know in my classroom there has to be a procedure and system for everything and if we have a bookcase to store the books, they will stay more organized.

I would so much appreciate support for this project.

I put in long days and spend a lot of my own money but I still need more resources. Budget cuts have limited funding for classroom materials. Please know that your support will be greatly appreciated. I take my calling very seriously and strive to help my students be successful. I want them to benefit from the same resources that suburban districts provide. We will all appreciate your gifts. Thanks in advance for your consideration!
