This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a sweet, energetic, and joyful bunch. They live in a diverse inner-city community, which has been hit hard by the recent closures. Our students continue to benefit from the free school lunch program, and from the many efforts of our school community to keep learning engagement high.

During our separation my students and families have made me so proud with their daily participation and communication.

Their engagement is particularly meaningful to me, as I know their at-home resources are very limited, and staying connected can be a struggle. My main priorities at this time are to enrich their days to the best of my ability, to encourage learning, and to keep them feeling loved and cared for by their teacher, as they would be at school.

My Project

It's been several weeks now since my students and I have found ourselves far from each other and the learning space that is our home away from home. My mind often wanders to the things which made that place special... things that brought the joy. One of the activities that brought us the most joy in learning was reading together. You might say that's just the teacher talking, but I know it's true! My littles get lost in the wonder of books, and love discovering their growing abilities. Sadly, the vast majority of my students aren't fortunate enough to enjoy ample reading libraries at home.

I would love to continue offering my students access to books and stories while we are apart, by bringing the library to them!

These books will allow me to share live as well as recorded read alouds with my students. They will give my kids the opportunity to let their imaginations run wild, and to step outside of their confined spaces if even for a short while. This is a time when our kids need to experience the joy of reading, and the escape one finds in the pages of a book, as much as they ever have. Thank you for helping me provide it!
