Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students love being immersed in different worlds—whether through video games, reading, or watching TV shows. These immersive experiences foster creative minds that can think critically and solve problems. I have students from all around the world, some of whom are still learning English. The best way my students learn is when they can relate to what is being taught. For example, if they are reading a novel, they like to feel connected to—and represented by—the characters.

For this year-long project, students will read aloud as a class on a weekly basis while completing book studies, reflections, and technology-based assignments related to each book.

Science will come alive through the characters in the books, as well as the concepts we will be covering in my Earth science class (astronomy, geology, etc.).

I have chosen books at different Lexile levels—a student’s Lexile score indicates the grade level at which they are reading. For 6th grade, the target Lexile level is 950L. The three books I am requesting span a range of levels to meet students where they are and then challenge them as we build vocabulary along the way.

Below are the different Lexile levels:

*The Lion of Mars – 530L

*The Wild Robot – 740L

*Journey to the Center of the Earth – 1000L

Additionally, I want to foster a positive reading environment in which students feel at ease as they read. For this reason, I would like to provide tea and light snacks during reading time. Each student would also receive a magnetic bookmark to help keep track of their place in the text.
