Books, Books...Science Books!

Help me give my students the opportunity to expand their ideas and vision of "science" through a classroom library of books that are all about science. I am particularly focusing on female scientists to help inspire and empower!

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a diverse group of motivated students who are working hard to create the future of their dreams. Many of them are on track to become first generation college graduates. This year they are being challenged to compete in the district and county science fair, taking on an additional project that will hopefully leave them beaming with pride and accomplishment by the end.

The students will also be exposed to more engineering challenges and science investigations throughout the year.

Using outdated, broken, or dysfunctional equipment does not provide my students with the challenging learning opportunities that they deserve. Functioning science equipment will serve as the data collection tools they need, so they can analyze, interpret, and draw conclusions based on evidence.

My Project

The books that I have selected will give my students opportunities to read novels about the science concepts they are learning about (or will learn about) in class. Making learning relevant and providing students with more opportunities to make connections with what we are learning in class will help increase in their understanding and engagement. I have an avid group of readers in my classroom this year and want to open up their eyes to the history of science, some of famous scientists who have changed our world, and some stories of "kid scientists" who are fascinated with the world around them.

I want to make a curated - and eventually extensive - library of science books that students can choose from.

My long term goal is to have a grade level appropriate novel that also relates to the unit/subject we are covering, for every unit!

So many new and exciting books are published every year, and I know that my list is small. I would also LOVE to hear of any books that you recommend that can inspire and empower young scientists. I am especially looking for ones that are about females, and would love books that highlight scientists or characters from Mexico or the Philippines as a large population of our students have ties to those places.
