This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
In August, the doors opened to a new charter school in Savannah, Georgia. Our students will come from all over Savannah, seeking the promise of a student-centered school with a focus on community involvement and social justice. Our students will learn that they can see problems in the world and take steps to fix those problems. Their voices will matter and bring change around them.
My young students have diverse backgrounds and life experiences, but they all share a thirst for learning how to read.
They lack simple books with accessible text.
We are a diverse group of students in Savannah. We will represent many socioeconomic and belief systems. Together, our celebration and learning from our differences will make us stronger.
My Project
We've just celebrated the 100th Day of School, and the students are budding into readers and writers. Our book baskets are full with on level books that allow us to practice reading independently daily.
We need guided reading book sets that allow students to practice reading in small groups.
We've seen such growth that kids are ready for longer texts with more complex phonic skills. These books will allow me to meet with small groups of kids daily and keep a fresh book in their hands to challenge their bright brains and help us keep our momentum. The sets are balanced with fiction and non-fiction, providing motivational texts for all kids!
