My Students

"If you are going to get anywhere in life you have to read a lot of books." -- Roald Dahl

I teach a first and second grade multi-age class at a charter school in South San Diego County.

Roughly 75% of the students at our school are eligible for free or reduced lunch and about 60% are English language learners. I teach a multi-age class meaning that half of my students are first graders and half are second. If I had to describe my class I would say they are thoughtful, motivated and full of personality. Each day they come to school eager to learn, daring to take chances, and ready to express their creativity. They are all working relentlessly to learn to read as well as comprehend what they are reading. Sixteen of my twenty-one students are not only learning how to read, but are also learning English as their second language. Their persistence, positivity, and work ethics have led them to many successes this year and I am beyond proud to call them my kiddos!

My Project

I am requesting more books for my students as our current classroom library is very limited. I am a first year teacher and therefore do not have a large collection of books. There were no books in my classroom when I started, however thanks to donations by a used book store and other teachers I have a library of about 200 books. I have also spent some of my own money to add some of my favorite children's books to the library. Most of the books I got are at a first grade or lower second grade reading level since that is the level my students entered the classroom at. As the year has progressed so have my students and now many of them are ready for more challenging and longer books. All I hear during silent reading lately is "I want a chapter book!". Unfortunately I only have about five chapter books and they are at a third grade level and are from a series written for girls. It saddens me that I am not able to give my students the books they are ready for and desire.

Having these books in my classroom library will excite, challenge and engage my students.

These books will not only allow them to continue their progress in reading by allowing them access to more challenging text, but will also excite them about reading. They have all worked so hard to develop as readers and they deserve to have a variety of books at their level in their classroom.
