I teach 11-13 year olds in my 6th grade classroom. They're a beautifully eclectic bunch, with a wide range of personalities and talents. They're rambunctious, curious little rays of sunshine (most days), and even when they're not, they still steal my heart. They're innocent preteens and teens caught in the throes of maturation, poverty, and parental substance abuse. My students are my babies for a year. Then they are the people who run up to hug me at football games. Or yell from their mom's car when they see me around town. They're the people that walk by my house and stop just to say hello. And beg to be my Facebook friend, so I don't forget them. They're wonderful little people.
With high interest, varied level books, each of my students will be able to choose from a plethora of books that will surely nab their attention, which is hard to do at this grade level. Life experiences, interests, reading attainment as well as so many other factors come into play here. With these books though, my babies will be able to have a more wide variety of text to choose from during independent reading time. Help me, help my kiddos, by providing these high interest texts to them. Just one book read, could change the life of a kid forever. If nothing else, these texts will help them improve their reading levels, which in itself is a huge to-do!!
