This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic 1st graders who love to learn! Our class is made up of 12 boys and 12 girls. Our small school is a kind and caring learning environment, nestled in a neighborhood just outside of downtown Los Angeles. Approximately 70% of our students are considered economically disadvantaged and qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our population is diverse, with students coming from many ethnic backgrounds. We have received the honors of Title I High Achieving School and California Distinguished School.

My Project

My students love to read and often do so in their free time. As first graders who are becoming independent readers, they need many opportunities to practice. While I am working with small groups of students, other students can choose a book, like Fly Guy or Pete the Cat, from our collection to read as they develop their fluency. Our classroom library definitely needs some new books for kids to choose from. At our school, Students visit the school library only twice a month, and many of my students do not visit the public library. For most students, the books in our classroom are their main source of quality children's literature.
