Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I currently teach 23 second graders at a low-income public school in Washington Heights, New York. My students are full of energy and are motivated to learn. They have made so much progress since September and continue to develop their reading skills. However, our library books are in need of an update. It seems that almost everyday at least one student approaches me with a book that is falling apart. It is wonderful that my students are reading and even re-reading many of our books, but the bindings have become weak and pages are falling out. I have tried tape and stapling the books back together, but it does not always work. I do not want to remove the overused books from our library since I do not have the resources to replace them. My students need new reading books that are on their reading levels. My students would benefit greatly from a set of new books that they can continue to share with each other. I can just see their excitement as we add the books to our library and 'retire' the ones that have been read over and over. In addition, the books that I have had to remove would be newly added to our library so that students that have not had a chance, can read them. Thank you so much for your help in providing my class with the books they need to continue to learn and grow.
